Causes Of Vision Problems And Vision Treatment

Health & Medical Blog

Many people experience vision problems throughout their lives. However, some do not know how to go about treating them, and some just don't catch the vision problems in time for effective treatment. It's important to have regular check-ups with your eye doctor. If you are diagnosed with vision problems, there are treatment options to help you. Read on to learn more.

Causes of Vision Problems

Eyesight problems are generally caused by underlying conditions.

The following conditions can play a part in vision problems:

  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Lazy eye

Other factors that can play a part include:

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Too much sun or light
  • Smoking
  • Trauma or injury

Your eyes are very important for the function of everyday life. It's crucial to take the proper steps to make sure you don't play a part in your worsening eyesight.

Vision Treatment Services

Depending on the reason your vision is worsening, there are a few different treatment options to correct the problem or ensure it doesn't get worse.

Glasses/Contacts

Glasses and contacts are one of the most widely known treatment options. Those who do not want to undergo surgery can be given a prescription from their eye doctor for glasses and contacts. To be as effective as possible, glasses or contacts should be worn continuously, except when sleeping. Glasses and contacts help correct any refractive issues (e.g. nearsightedness, farsightedness) with your vision.

Eye Drops

Medicated eye drops are commonly used to treat glaucoma. The drops cannot help you get your vision back, but they can prevent further damage. For the best results, the eye drops need to be taken regularly. These eye drops help relieve the extra pressure in your eyes to ensure it does not cause extra damage.

Surgery

Surgery is offered to help correct or prevent further vision problems with a few different conditions.

Those conditions can include:

  • Lazy eye: If the lazy eye is severe, you can receive surgery to move some of the muscles in your eye to correct the position.
  • Cataracts: Cataract surgery consists of replacing the natural eye lens with an artificial lens to get rid of cloudy vision.
  • Glaucoma: When getting surgery for glaucoma, surgeons will implant a small shunt into your eye to manually drain excess liquid from your eye. This lowers your eye pressure.
  • Astigmatism: A few corrective surgery options for astigmatism involve a surgeon reshaping or removing part of the cornea in your eye. Another surgery option is similar to cataract surgery. Instead of replacing the natural lens with a regular artificial lens, it would be replaced with a lens specialized to correct astigmatism.
