Finding Relief From Heel Pain

Health & Medical Blog

Severe foot pain can be quite debilitating, especially if you have a job that requires constant walking or getting up from a desk. In order to avoid further injury, it is essential to interpret symptoms and begin treatment quickly. One major cause of foot problems is plantar fasciitis, and there are various self-care and medical treatments available so that you can resume normal activities pain free.

What Is It?

The plantar fascia, located in and around the heel of the feet, acts as a support for the arch and also functions as a shock absorber. When this tissue becomes tense, it causes inflammation along with pain that radiates through the affected foot. This is worst both in the early morning when getting out of bed or when standing up after sitting for a long period.

Who Gets Plantar Fasciitis?

This condition can affect anyone, but there are certain individuals who are at higher risk. For instance, those who are avid runners put stress on their feet, which may lead to pain. The Mayo Clinic states the following are also risk factors for developing plantar fasciitis:

  • Age between 40 and 60
  • Obesity
  • Those with flat feet or a high arch
  • Uneven weight distribution while walking

Stretching Exercises Are the Treatment of Choice

In most cases, foot stretches, in combination with over-the-counter medications, effectively ease pain.  With the help of a doctor or physical therapist, you will perform a series of exercises aimed at extending and strengthening the foot to reduce tension. For extra support, you may need to wear a foot splint in order to maintain a stretching position while sleeping. During waking hours, orthotic shoe inserts can also help reduce foot stress.

Injections and Other Procedures Can Treat Chronic Pain

For those with long-term problems, steroid injections around the pain site can reduce inflammation. According to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, this is effective for several weeks to months. However, repeated injections may result in further damage to the foot. In the most severe cases, the plantar fascia can be separated from the heel surgically, but this is considered a last resort as the foot may also lose arch support.

Although it is one of the more common foot problems, plantar fasciitis can severely limit your ability to accomplish everyday activities. Stretches and other solutions can greatly speed up the recovery process. If you are experiencing persistent foot pain, speak with a doctor now to discuss your options.
