Some Important Things To Know About Allergies

Health & Medical Blog

Allergy treatment is incredibly important. If you have allergies, and don't know it, it can negatively affect your quality of life. Luckily, there are things that you can do to make your life easier. Here are some things that you should know.

What Are The Symptoms Of Allergies?

One of the first things you need to be able to recognize is what allergies look like. There are too many people who think that if they are not going into full anaphylaxis then they don't have allergies. Having trouble breathing is just one symptom of allergies, but it is not what happens to everyone when they are exposed to an allergen. Instead, there are quite a few other ways allergies affect your body.

First, you could get skin problems. Itchy skin, along with rashes and eczema are a common sign of allergies. You might also notice that you have watery eyes that itch and burn. You could get a runny nose, an itchy throat, or even start to swell around the throat, eyes, or even extremities. Some people even get anxious and their heart rate speeds up. This can lead to feeling irritable and frustrated for no real reason.

How Do You Get Tested For Allergies?

There are a couple different biological causes for allergies, and it depends on the root cause for how you test. If you have an IgE autoimmune response, you will need to get a scratch test done. This will be when the allergist pricks your back with concentrated amounts of different common allergens and see what happens to the skin. If the skin becomes red, irritated and itchy, then you have an allergy to that allergen. You can also have igG allergies, which happen more with food and digestion. For this, you would get a blood test done. The blood test will tell you how reactive you are to each food.

What Kind Of Treatment Is There?

In many cases, you can simply avoid negative symptoms by avoiding the allergen. However, in some situations, like with environmental allergies, you cannot completely avoid trees, grass and dust, so you need additional treatment. You can take over the counter medications daily, or you can get allergy shots. These shots are ideal because they help your body to realize that the allergen is not dangerous and hopefully build up a resistance to the allergen so that it doesn't affect you so negatively.

These are just a couple things you need to know about allergies.
